On Monday 23 November work will begin to thin overgrown woodland at Sutton Park.
The work will last for approximately eight weeks and will remove heavily overgrown holly to give broadleaf oak trees new room to grow and provide light to the woodland floor.
For many decades Sutton Park has been fighting a war against holly.
Now, thanks to the hard work of staff who have been grappling to take charge of the situation, Historic England, Natural England and the Forestry Commission have got together with a major British company to start clearing the holly next week.
Incredibly, this won’t cost the Park or the council a penny. Thanks to some lateral thinking, the holly will be used as bio-fuel, helping to solve Britain’s energy crisis and providing a little income too.
The work will be carried out in strict accordance with UK Forestry Standards, paying very careful attention to the historical and ecological requirements of the area.
There will still be plenty of berried holly for Christmas activities at the Visitor Centre from 5 – 20 December.
